Executive-level direct search - are you searching from too limited a pool?

Writer: Vesa Schutskoff

Some websites advertise their own candidate pools for board searches. Some organizations limit their board searches to their own members. In many municipal organizations, board positions in subsidiary companies are still distributed based on a specific political alignment. While a good board member can certainly be found this way, does this narrow selection process truly serve the company’s business success and the interests of its owners? I would take a more comprehensive approach.

Analysis is key to success

Before determining the model for recruiting board members, it is essential to deeply understand the current state and future needs of the company and its board. This requires thorough analysis and insight into the ownership strategy, business strategy, organizational status, and current board composition. Not just any board professional will do—what’s needed is someone who can drive the company’s strategic development at that moment and contribute to its execution. Just like in team sports, you need to know what position and playing style you are looking for before scouting potential players.

The importance of the direct search process and selection

A well-executed analysis directs the search process effectively, eliminating unnecessary effort. This means conducting a broad and comprehensive market screening and targeting the search where the required expertise can actually be found. The best candidates are rarely found in restricted lists. Instead, they are those who are at the right stage in their careers, motivated by this type of company and business phase, and possess the right competencies to meet the identified needs.

Think of it like buying a car — when you know what you need, a wide and careful comparison, along with a test drive, ensures that your choice aligns with your goals.

Success is determined after selection

Once a new board member has been selected, the work is far from over. A new board composition brings opportunities that must be built upon and fostered—this is the time to reassess roles and collaboration. It’s crucial to ensure that each member can utilize their expertise optimally and that the board’s operations are actively evaluated and developed.

Think of it as a symphony orchestra—every instrument must fit into the ensemble, and the best performance emerges only when collaboration and roles are well-aligned.

Final thoughts

Executive-level direct search is not just about selecting a "good professional"—it is a strategic move that impacts a company’s long-term success. A well-executed search and selection process ensures that the company finds the most suitable board member for its current situation, someone who supports strategic development and competitiveness.

Approach the search like selecting a wine for a meal—when you know what’s on the menu, you can find the wine that complements the whole experience and elevates it to a new level. The best discoveries often happen when you look beyond the usual shelves.
